Calima today

The town, the shore and the region

What surrounds Berlín II, told with data.

Darién

A town 5 kilometers away

The seat of Calima El Darién

The town of Darién, seat of the municipality of Calima El Darién, is about 5 kilometers from the estate. It was founded in 1912 by settlers from Antioquia, Valle and Caldas, and the municipality was created on June 23, 1939.

In 2024 the municipality had about 19,420 residents, nearly two in three of them in town. Since December 2021 it has been part of the Valle governor’s office Pueblos Mágicos (magic towns) program.

In 2022 and 2023, April, with Holy Week, was the busiest month. August brings the Fiestas del Verano, the summer festival, which held its 60th edition in 2025.

The shore

How the lakeshore grew

When the water came in 1966, the land around the lake was mostly farms. In the mid-1980s they began to be subdivided; in the 1990s the roads were paved, and since then many families from Cali have turned farms into weekend houses and subdivisions.

In this century tourism grew faster, and many people who worked the land moved on to looking after houses and gardens or to service jobs. In August 2026 there were 279 active tourism providers in the national registry, from rental farms and houses to hotels and campgrounds. Most of them are vacation rentals.

Growth also raised questions. In 2023 Colombia’s Inspector General’s Office warned that the municipality had grown without the public-services infrastructure it needs, under a land-use plan from 1999.

Next door

The other two Berlíns

Facing the lake, to the right of Berlín II lies what was Berlín III. It was sold over the years, and today it has homes and businesses.

To the left lies what was Berlín I, now a farm with other owners.

They are neighbors, not part of the project. What happens at Berlín II is told on The project page.
